THE SURROUNDINGS

  1. THE BALTEZERS CHURCH

If you are not in a hurry, take a light stroll after the meal to the Lielais Baltezers lake which is just across the road. From the shore, you can fully appreciate the modest profoundness of the Baltezers baroque church which lies in harmony with the surrounding area. During its existence, the church has literally “eaten” a lot of salt – in the USSR time its walls contained mineral fertilizers and empty packaging as well as salt and soured cabbages. It has also served as a club and cinema, later as a welding workshop and telephone exchange. The destroyed historical interior of the church has now gained a unique and contemporary look with a light, welcoming, and very humane vibe. It is worth stopping by to savor a bit of eternity that echoes in the modestly solemn arches of the church.

If you want to know more about the possibilities to see the interior of the church, please ask our staff.

2. THE CHANNEL

Another fascinating witness of its time is the Baltezers channel which must be crossed when continuing the trip in the Riga direction. By connecting the lakes of Mazais Baltezers and Lielais Baltezers, it forms a part of the Gauja–Daugava waterway system which was created at the turn of the 19th–20th century for purposes of log driving to Riga. One can only admire the bright minds of the time who created this complex hydrotechnical structure. Nowadays the channel serves as a route for water tourists, and it still leads travelers to Riga.

3. THE BALTIC FOREST TRAIL

Along the shore of the Mazais Baltezers lake meanders a route that connects the Baltic States – the Baltic Forest Trail. It is a part of the long European hiking distance that crosses six countries and stretches over the length of 2141 km. The trail is 674 km long in the territory of Latvia, and active recreation lovers can walk to Tallinn which is the finish of the trail.

These are not the only notable landmarks in the area – there is something for everyone in and around Baltezers. Active recreation seekers, leisurely travelers, families with children, and seniors alike will find a suitable way for spending time. A variety of walking and hiking trails, cycling routes in summer, skiing tracks in winter, water sports, historical sites, and a wide array of accommodations make this area an important stop on the map for tourists and everyday drivers. If you are interested in experiencing more from this offer, do not hesitate to ask us – we will help you on your way with advice and recommendations. See you again soon!

4. RĪGAS ŪDENSAPGĀDES MUZEJS

Just a couple of kilometers further on the shore of the Mazais Baltezers lake lies another unique engineering and technical structure – the old pumping station which hosts the Riga Water Supply Museum. It holds testimonies about the four centuries-old water supply system of the capital city, an important part of which is also this old pumping station that was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, for the enlargement purposes of the Riga water supply system, a search for new drinking water sources was actively initiated in this area. By careful examination of the ground layers, the value of the groundwater was discovered. Its supplies are almost endless, and the chemical composition is so unique that water does not need treating – it is rich in mineral substances and ideally suitable for drinking. This water was evaluated as the second-best in Europe, right after water from the Alpine streams that provided the city of Vienna with drinking water. Even nowadays groundwater of the Baltezers lake, which is still consumed by half of the Riga population, is among Europe’s top ten drinking water sources in terms of quality. The old pumping station though is no longer in operation, but its equipment which was manufactured in Riga is still in excellent condition and can be seen in the museum.
